Introduction
Gilgit-Baltistan, known for its breathtaking mountainous terrain, faces unique challenges when it comes to food security. Only 2 percent of the land in this region is cultivable, and the harsh weather conditions allow for just one crop season annually. This limited agricultural potential is further compounded by risky roads, a lack of agricultural training, insufficient funding, and inadequate equipment. As a result, wheat cultivation in the region is minimal, which leads to recurring food security crises.
Challenges
Recognizing these challenges, the Food Department of Gilgit-Baltistan is committed to ensuring that no resident goes without essential food supplies. Our strategy focuses on the timely procurement and transportation of the best quality subsidized wheat. We work diligently to bring this wheat to residents' doorsteps through a network of local dealers, ensuring that even the most remote areas have access to necessary food supplies. By addressing logistical challenges and improving our distribution methods, we strive to mitigate the impact of the harsh environmental and infrastructural conditions. Our goal is to provide stable, reliable access to high-quality wheat and flour, thereby enhancing food security and improving the quality of life for all residents of Gilgit-Baltistan.
