The enactment of the GB Food Act 2021 is a landmark achievement that has transformed the food landscape in Gilgit-Baltistan. This legislation has expanded the mandate of the GB Food Department beyond wheat and flour to encompass all aspects of food production, handling, and distribution. The Act has also empowered food department officers to enforce quality standards, ensuring a revolution in traditional food manufacturing and distribution practices. With this legislation, quality food is now a guaranteed right for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
In a significant development, the Food Department has established a state-of-the-art Food Testing Lab in collaboration with the government. This lab enables the testing of food samples locally, ensuring the quality of food items and eliminating adulteration. The Food Lab is a critical infrastructure that supports the food department's mission to provide safe and wholesome food to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The Food Department, in collaboration with the World Food Organization, has initiated a food fortification project to enrich flour with essential nutrients. Micro-feeders have been installed in flour mills to enhance the nutritional value of flour, fulfilling the nutritional requirements of the region's residents. This project has improved the health and well-being of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly vulnerable segments like children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
To ensure transparency and fairness in the distribution of subsidized wheat and flour, the Food Department has embarked on a digitalization initiative. A digital survey is underway, and a Food Management System has been created to monitor the distribution process. Upon completion, this system will prevent pilferages, ensuring that subsidized wheat and flour reach the intended beneficiaries.
The Food Department has strengthened monitoring of wheat and flour distribution by establishing check posts, installing CCTV cameras, and leveraging technology to prevent pilferages. This enhanced monitoring system ensures that food items are distributed fairly and transparently, reaching the targeted populations without any diversion or misuse.
